Jose GamarraJose Gamarra (Uruguay born 1934) Jose Gamarra was born in 1934 in the city of Tacuarembo, in Uruguay. He was formally trained in the School of Fine Arts in Montevideo and later on between 1959-1960, in Rio de Janeriro, Brasil. Between 1960-63, he became a professor of oil and fresco painting at the School of Modern Art in Sao Paolo(Escuela de Arte Moderno de la Fundacion Alvarez Pentrado). His early works are preoccupied with historical motifs of his culture such the pre-columbian images, which can be seen in our painting. He later worked with more color and painted imaginary landscapes with metaphorical images of modern society. His work has been exhibited in major exhibitions in Europe, USA, and Latin America. A recent impoartant exhibition of Pre-Columbian art featured some of his early works. Exhibition history:
